BRSR Compliance Checklist for 2026: What Indian Companies Need to Track

Business Responsibility & Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) is now mandatory for the top listed companies in India, and its scope keeps expanding down the market-cap list each year. If your organisation is in scope — or expects to be soon — waiting until the reporting deadline to gather data is the single biggest reason BRSR season becomes painful.

What BRSR actually asks for

BRSR is structured around nine principles covering environment, social and governance performance. In practice, most of the heavy lifting falls into a few buckets:

  • Energy consumption and GHG emissions (Scope 1 & 2, increasingly Scope 3)
  • Water withdrawal, discharge and waste generation
  • Workforce data — diversity, wages, training hours, safety incidents
  • Supply chain and human rights due diligence
  • Governance disclosures — board composition, policies, grievance mechanisms

Why the March scramble happens

Most of this data lives in different departments — HR has workforce numbers, facilities has energy bills, EHS has incident logs — and by the time the sustainability team asks for it, three months have gone into chasing spreadsheets instead of analysing performance.

The fix: track it monthly, not annually

The organisations that find BRSR straightforward are the ones capturing this data through the year as part of their operational systems, not as a separate annual exercise. A digital EHS/ESG platform that logs energy, waste, incidents and workforce data as they happen turns BRSR reporting into an export, not a project.

A quick self-check

Ask yourself: could your team produce last month's energy, water and incident numbers, by site, in the next hour? If the answer is no, that's the gap worth closing before the next reporting cycle — not after it.
